Madonna (born on August 16, 1958) identified as the Queen of Pop, is an American artist and actress. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, Madonna is the best-selling female pop artist of the century and the 2nd best selling female artist in the United States. She is also present in the Guinness World Records as the all time most successful female artist and in the Hall of Fame of Rock and Roll.
Madonna was born in Bay City, Michigan, on August 16, 1958 as Madonna Louise Ciccone, attending the St. Frederick's and St. Andrew's Elementary School, and later on the West Middle School. Later on, at the Rochester Adams High School she was a straight-A student. After graduation she received a dance scholarship to the University of Michigan. In 1977 she left college to follow a dance career and moved to New York. She worked as a waitress and in some modern dance troupes. Madonna formed her first rock band, the Breakfast Club, with musician Dan Gilroy, leaving them later on, forming another band, the Emmy in 1980 with drummer Stephen Bray. Madonna signed a singles deal with Sire Records and her first release was "Everybody" on April 24, 1982.
Her album, Like a Virgin (1984) became her first number one album on the Billboard 200. In 1985 she begun dating actor Sean Penn and married him on her birthday that year. Their marriage ended divorcing in January 1989. While shooting for the film "Breathless" Madonna started a relationship with Warren Beatty which ended in the fall of 1990. From late 1990 to early 1991, Madonna dated model and porn star Tony Ward, also having a relationship with rapper Vanilla Ice. In mid 1991 her first documentary film "Truth or Dare" was released.
Madonna founded her entertainment company, Maverick, in 1992, as a joint venture with Time Warner. The erotic thrillers "Body of Evidence" and "Dangerous Game" continued her provocative and controversial image. Madonna received heavy negative publicity from critics and fans regarding her behavior. Madonna tried to improve her image with a more cultivated appearance on the Jay Leno show and with her album Bed Time Stories. At the same time she started dating fitness trainer Carlos Leon. In 1996 she plays the role of Eva Peron in the successful film, Evita, winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. In 1996 Madonna's and Carlos Leon's daughter was born. In 1999 she met Guy Ritchie and in August 2000 their son was born; they got married later that year in Scotland.
In January 2005 she raised money for the Asian tsunami victims at the "Tsunami Aid" concert. She also performed at a benefit concert in London for Britain's Make Poverty History campaign and for the Global Call for Action Against Poverty. In Malawi, Madonna founded an orphanage and filed adoption papers for a boy from that orphanage, but due to various legal disputes the adoption was finalized in May 2008.
In December 2008 she divorced from Guy Ritchie. Madonna adopted another boy from Malawi following other legal disputes. On September 13, 2009 Madonna appeared at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, paying a tribute to Michael Jackson with a speech.
Madonna made use of MTV and her music videos to set up her popularity and fame and to improve her recorded work. She is one of the greatest pop artists of all times as an outstandingly successful female artist. Madonna achieved her success by constantly reinventing herself and her music all together.
